11,000 Cubans have applied for refuge in Mexico this year

The Commission for Aid to Refugees (COMAR) of Mexico reported that almost 11,000 Cubans have requested refuge in that country so far in 2022, according to figures released this weekend.

According to a graph published by COMAR on its social networks, the number of Cubans who requested refuge in the Aztec country at the end of June was 10,791, placing the island as the second nation with the most requests, behind Honduras, which had 13,750.

In the third place of countries whose citizens requested refuge in Mexico from January to June 2022 was Haiti, with 8,230, and in fourth Venezuela, with 7,196.

For its part, the report indicates that the majority of migrants who requested refuge entered Mexico through Tapachula, in Chiapas, where 39,241 requests were received.

COMAR received 1,093 refugee applications from Cuban citizens in June, from January to the end of May the Mexican institution had received 9,698 requests.

The numbers of people seeking refuge in Mexico have increased exponentially in the last three years. In April 2020, some 969 people requested documentation to stay in the country, this past April 2022, 10,466 did so.

In the case of Cubans, the numbers have also increased, especially since November 2021, when the Nicaraguan government approved travel from the island to its territory without the need for a visa.

The free visa to Nicaragua opened an escape route for Cubans who want to leave the country for the United States. Likewise, the migratory crisis has worsened in the region.

Local media say that Mexico, the third largest recipient of refugee claims in the world, began to see an increase in refugee claims after former President Enrique Peña Nieto established the Southern Border Program.

According to COMAR data, people from Cuba have been among the ten nationalities that most request asylum in Mexico since 2017. Since 2018, more than 23,000 Cubans have requested refuge from COMAR.
