Ariel Ruiz Urquiola is hospitalized after eight days on a hunger and thirst strike

Cuban biologist Ariel Ruiz Urquiola, who has been on a hunger and thirst strike for nine days, was hospitalized Monday in serious condition.

According to activist Evelyn Calderón, who has accompanied Urquiola during his strike, the scientist has “a cardiovascular problem due to the amount of stress he suffered during the day and the effort he made to give an extensive interview.”

“The biologist has only accepted parenteral rehydration but the strike continues at the hospital. The objective of hospitalization is to stabilize the heart rate and hydrate it,” Calderón said.

Ariel Ruiz Urquiola declared a hunger and thirst strike on July 4 in front of the Wilson Palace, headquarters of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva, Switzerland, with the aim of demanding the intervention of the entity before the recent prohibition of the Cuban regime to enter the Island to his sister, the activist Omara Ruiz Urquiola.

In addition to staying without food or water for all these days, the scientist also removed the drugs from his HIV treatment, which was diagnosed almost three years ago.

This Sunday Urquiola had declared: “I am not in full physical condition, but what I can assure you is that, in my mind, I continue to be a person not only strong, but also focused on my convictions, on my ideas of struggle, and I will be here until my body resists in this fight between the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the strength that an individual can show.
