Cuban Political Prisoner Roberto Pérez Ortega denounces torture received in the Combinado del Este prison

Roberto Pérez Ortega, a demonstrator of the anti-government protests of July 12, 2021 in La Güinera, was tortured and beaten in the Combinado del Este by soldiers from that prison, located in eastern Havana.

Sources detail that on Thursday, August 11, the protester had shouted for help for a prisoner who tried to commit suicide and was losing a lot of blood. Since no one came to help him, he began to shout slogans in protest. Witnesses indicate that several guards responded to the shouting and began to brutally beat him, then took him to an isolation cell and brutally tortured him.

From inside the prison they testify that the soldiers threw his head against the wall and sprayed spray into his eyes and even into his throat.

In addition to being beaten and handcuffed, the inmate was isolated in a punishment cell where he was tortured, the location of the torture room is on the first floor, north wing of Building 1.

Roberto Pérez Ortega, 36, is the father of a 14-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy. In addition, he works as an actor and model and has also composed and recorded music for the movies.

During the protest in La Güinera, the demonstrator tried to help Diubis Laurencio when he was shot. Due to his participation in these events, he was tried along with sixteen other people in December 2021 in the Municipal Court of Diez de Octubre and sentenced to 25 years in prison, one more than those stated in the prosecutor’s petition.
