Political prisoner suffers psychological torture by the Cuban dictatorship

Yanley López Basulto, 21 years old and a political prisoner of 11J in the Combinado del Este prison in Havana, is undergoing psychiatric treatment and is very thin, according to what his mother Janet Basulto has denounced to Radio Martí.

Basulto relates that his son has “psychiatric problems” since childhood.

“He is receiving psychiatric treatment in there because he has had many crises, and then he lost a lot of weight. Since they told him 12 years, until now, he has lost 25 pounds,” explained the mother of the political prisoner.

Due to nervous breakdowns, the young inmate “is losing his hair and is very upset. He does not understand that number of years for nothing”, the woman repeats several times, adding that “until now, in the videos, he did not see himself entering the store, nor taking anything out of it; he did throw stones”.

During the demonstrations on July 11, 2021, some protesters vented their frustration against state stores in Freely Convertible Currency (MLC), a symbol of the marked socioeconomic differences created by the regime.

Yanley López Basulto was arrested on July 12, 2021 in the town of Güira de Melena, for his participation in the protests. Accused of “public disorder”, “attack” and “sabotage”, the young man was sentenced in the first instance to 12 years in prison and, recently, his sentence was reduced to 8 years after an appeal process.
