The IACHR grants precautionary measures to Luis Robles, political prisoners of the Cuban regime

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) decided to accept this Tuesday a request for precautionary measures in favor of the Cuban political prisoner Luis Robles Elizástegui.

Through Resolution 41 of 2022, the continental entity attached to the OAS seeks the protection of Robles Elizástegui, considering that he is deprived of liberty “in a serious and urgent situation since his rights to life, personal integrity and health are at risk of irreparable harm.

The young man was sentenced to 5 years in prison for false crimes of enemy propaganda and disobedience after on December 4, 2020, he peacefully protested alone on San Rafael Boulevard, in Havana, with a handwritten banner that read “Freedom no more repression” and “Free Denis,” referring to imprisoned rapper Denis Solis, who is now in exile.

The organization indicates that Robles “would be in severe detention conditions without receiving medical care to date.”

“His relatives and lawyer alleged difficulties in maintaining contact and making visits, as well as obtaining information about his detention and health conditions” and “he has suffered acts of aggression by prison officers in prison,” says the IACHR press release. .

Robles suffers from chronic gastritis, a disease for which he needs medication that has not been provided to him in prison.

In its communication, the Commission regrets not having the observations of the Cuban State, despite the fact that they were requested in accordance with the Regulations.

However, the organization demanded that the Cuban dictatorship ensure that Robles’ detention conditions are compatible with applicable international standards on the matter: that he be given the medical care he requires, that he be allowed regular visits from relatives and lawyer, that the application of some alternative measure to the deprivation of liberty be assessed and that actions be taken in the face of threats, harassment, intimidation or acts of violence against the political prisoner.

Likewise, the IACHR asks the Cuban regime to “report on the actions adopted in order to investigate the alleged facts that gave rise to the adoption of this precautionary measure and thus avoid its repetition.”
