US Coast Guard repatriates another 55 Cubans to the island

The United States Coast Guard repatriated 55 Cubans to the island on Tuesday, after six interceptions of migrants off the South Florida Keys.

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Charles Sexton alerted Sector Key West lookouts to an inflatable boat on May 9 at approximately 2 p.m. about 14 miles south of Salt Cay, Bahamas.

A Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations crew alerted Coast Guard Sector Key West lookouts to another rustic vessel around 5 p.m. on May 9, about 40 miles south of Key West, while a Good Samaritan notified agents of a rustic craft Thursday at approximately 8 a.m. in the vicinity of the American Shoal Lighthouse.

Three other vessels were sighted in the sector, one on Thursday, at approximately 9:45 a.m., about 15 miles south of Key West, the second on Friday, around noon, 33 miles south of that enclave, and a third also Friday, around 6:30 p.m., about 40 miles south of Marathon.

“Illegally crossing the unpredictable Florida Straits in makeshift vessels is very dangerous and can result in loss of life,” said Coast Guard District Seven security officer Mark Cobb. “Encourage your loved ones to migrate legally, it’s safer,” the agent concluded.

Last Friday, 86 Cuban migrants were repatriated to the island.

Since October 1, 2021, the Coast Guard has intercepted 1,879 Cubans compared to 5,396 in 2016, 1,468 in 2017, 259 in 2018, 313 in 2019, 49 in 2020 and 838 in 2021.
