Mother Amelia

Amelia Calzadilla, a young Cuban woman, mother, wife, daughter and granddaughter, from that hard-working town, suffering like few others, who by dint of blows is less and less happy even though it was her most distinctive feature, she couldn’t take it anymore and let go.

Everyone who reads this humble opinion has most likely heard at least once the statement in the form of an electric shock, a cry of anguish, of boredom, of “ostine” by the linguist Calzadilla.

Amelia made a second video yesterday to dispel all the slander that was poured on her, and to clarify who she is, what she studied, where she worked, the story of the father who began as an official of the “Involution” at the age of fourteen, the times that he remembers that he went to formalize his claims through official channels, which lead to a sealed compartment.

But above all Amelia, and perhaps for this reason it takes on much more value, makes it clear to us that she is not a fighting person, a warrior soul, but only a mother. And in this sense, she informs us that, the day after her angry and courageous proclamation appeared on the Facebook social network, they published in Cubadebate an unfortunate article accusing her, as they have always done with those who criticize something, but ridiculously, of being an agent of the imperialism, of an instrumentalized arsonist from Miami that was looking for a street rebellion, and in this sense those of us who live abroad should not laugh at this, because that line of accusation is the one that precedes the preventive prisons and subsequent sentences to decades in prison. The painful article is signed by a certain Ernesto Estévez Rams. Amelia also denounces the media manipulation of her words and her life, of an element whose pseudonym is Cuban Warrior, those two yes, proud mercenaries, not at the service of the CIA but of the propaganda and repressive machinery of the Cuban state.

In this last video, apart from ratifying her no va más, Amelia warns us that ipso facto a visit from some members of the Party nucleus in her area arrived at her house, whom she cordially attended, asking if she had suffered reprisals. Immediately afterwards, she received a summons for June 14 at 11 am from a government office in El Cerro, supposedly to deal with the issue of gas, which gave rise to her famous video. Of course, since we all suspect that she has nothing to do with the gas, they most likely try to put pressure on her, instill fear in her. Or who knows, perhaps, if they have any intelligence left in her hypothalamus until they solve the gas problem to silence her and show a condescending face.

But can anyone imagine that because we make a live video complaining that there is no chicken, that they earn money other than that which buys the groceries, that they cannot even be found that way, that the children do not have milk, that in the four sides and in all cardinal points the only thing you find are problems without any possibility of a solution, does a delegation from the single Party, dominant in the country, visit you?

Anyone in a normal society would be terrified, let’s imagine there knowing the sentences that were applied to those who came out to protest the famous 11-J. It draws attention from Cuba, being a country where testosterone, apparently, plays such an important and prevailing role, the number of brave, bold, even reckless women that this era is giving birth to, from Laura Pollán, all the Ladies in White, Yoani , Payá, and now the respected Amelia.

As she says, she does not want to be a heroine, much less a martyr, or represent anyone other than herself, or in any case the vast majority of Cuban mothers, but Amelia, I am sorry to tell you, whether you like it or not, you are already a reference of value and dignity.
