The free bearing of weapons: what is seen and what is not seen

Every time a madman commits a massacre against the civilian population in a city in the world with free carriage of arms, a debate is reopened and an argument is repeated: that of the need for a ban, so that these tragedies do not repeat themselves. . At every opportunity, the supporters of the restriction attack the defenders of this disputed right, almost as if blaming those of us who believe that disarming the civilian population is highly counterproductive for what happened.

The vision promoted by prohibition is already well known. However, the alternative position is often silenced and stigmatized. However, beyond the statistics that can be used on one side or the other, we must remember the classic French liberal Frederic Bastiat, who invited us to pay attention to what is seen and what is not seen.

For example, every time a weapon carrier manages to reduce or kill an aggressor, which can be counted as a statistic in favor of this right, surely, these benefits of the possession of weapons by the civilian population are not recorded. We are talking about the deterrent effect on crime of knowing that an attempted robbery, rape or homicide can end your own life.

It is also worth noting that the nations that have maintained this right have not fallen into the dictatorial processes of the countries that limited it. It is no coincidence that totalitarian governments, of all political signs and ideologies, have agreed on the need to disarm the civilian population. The founding fathers of the United States thought of this right for citizens for a reason. In those days, crime as we know it was not the main concern of intellectuals. They thought of the power of rebellion, in case any government tries to harm people. Seeing the loss of freedoms at the hands of politics that took place during the pandemic, anyone who believes that dictatorships cannot arise in the democratic West is mistaken.

Recent history further shows that firearms are not the only tools to target civil society in an act of terrorism. There are also plenty of examples where terrorists and aggressors, who, when they do not use other things (such as vehicles), also obtain arsenals in cities where possession is prohibited or highly restricted. However, none of this will be considered by supporters of the ban. It is that, deep down, they are not interested in an honest debate on this delicate issue. They are infatuated with a cause, which coincides with the conceptual framework of all the others they manage: the permanent defense of the growth of the State to the detriment of the individual.

That a deranged person obtains a firearm and attacks the citizenry is a serious issue, which should not be taken from demagoguery or from magical solutions. Imagine if every time an armed assailant obtains a rifle on the black market in a country with restrictions on possession and commits a crime that causes the loss of life of an innocent, we supporters of the possibility of arming blame the tragedy on the spokesmen for the restriction. They do it. On the hot bodies of the victims. Permanently. Not only do they not repair what would be the counterfactual alternative situation, the one they ignore, but they also compare the miseries of the real world with a utopia. After all, it is what the defenders of socialism always do, in all areas and in all discussions.
