Cristina K’s trial for corruption advances / “Petro Effect” collapses the stock market and shoots the dollar

Hi Folks. In Argentina, the Supreme Court of Justice rejected the proposals made by Cristina Kirchner to stop the trial against her for alleged corruption in public works. Also in that country, federal prosecutor Cecilia Incardona asked the judge in charge of the Venezuelan-Iranian plane case to investigate the pilot Gholamreza Ghasemi and his possible involvement with “international terrorism” and, based on the results of the investigation, determine that if “the flight and its crew entered our country for some criminal purpose”. The consequences of Gustavo Petro’s victory in Colombia have already been felt in the Colombian economy: the dollar rose by about 100 Colombian pesos and the stock market fell 5.42%. In Ecuador, the strike continues and President Lasso was able to extend the state of emergency, but the clashes continue and two deaths have already been recorded. In Italy, the 5 Star Movement is divided and its leader, Luigi Di Maio, announced that 50 M5E parliamentarians will form a new group called “Together for the Future”. This division was caused by the war in Ukraine, the support of the Italian government for the administration of Volodimir Zelensky and the refusal of the “grillinos” (followers of the movement’s founder, Beppe Grillo) to send weapons to the Ukrainians. And an earthquake in Afghanistan of magnitude 5.9 has left 280 dead and 150 injured.

Venezuelan-Iranian plane: the prosecutor asked to investigate the pilot and the entire crew for their possible link with “international terrorism”. Cecilia Incardona wants Judge Villena to order eleven measures to determine with certainty what the Emtrasur aircraft came to do in the country: Federal prosecutor Cecilia Incardona made a new presentation this Tuesday before Judge Federico Villena, to request that the investigation into the Iranian pilot Gholamreza Ghasemi and his possible link with “international terrorism”. After analyzing the FBI documentation and other reports, she advanced in a rearrangement of the criminal case opened a week ago and once requested evidence measures. So far “several traces have emerged that impose the need to continue the investigation regarding the pilot, the entire crew that depended on him, the aircraft and its cargo, in accordance with the obligations of the Argentine State to prevent and punish acts of terrorism” , maintains the opinion. And so, based on these situations, determine if “the flight and its crew entered our country for any criminal purpose.”

The dollar rises and the stock market falls in Colombia due to the triumph of Gustavo Petro. The price of the dollar in the interbank market closed with an average rise of $4,027 this Tuesday, during the first day after the election of Gustavo Petro as the new President. That price is $122.19 above the Representative Market Rate (TRM), which for today’s session stands at $3,905.05. In the Spot market, which is managed by the Colombian Stock Exchange and concentrates the largest volume of operations, the dollar had a day marked by a climate of nervousness, which later moderated. As a result, the currency had a strong volatility. At 8:00 am it reached a price of $4,090; it then rose to a high of $4,100, but dropped to $4,007.70 by 10:00 am. On the other hand, the Colombian Stock Exchange (BVC) opened yesterday with a drop of 5.42% to 1,378.10 points. This behavior is led by Ecopetrol, which fell 11.20% to $2,451. The list is followed by shares of companies such as Enka de Colombia, with a decrease of 9.09%, followed by Corficolombiana, with 8.84%.

Guillermo Lasso extends the state of exception after bypassing the opposition Assembly in Ecuador. There was a political move by the Ecuadorian president, Guillermo Lasso, against the national strike. The parliamentary session had already begun, during which the opposition had gathered around Correismo to repeal the state of emergency, when the president went ahead with a last-minute maneuver: he repealed executive decree number 455 to publish 459, with which it extended the controversial state of exception not only to Pichincha (which includes Quito), Imbabura and Cotopaxi, as in the first, but also to Chimborazo, Tungurahua and Pastaza. The presidential objective is to limit the impact of the national strike on its eighth day and prevent the indigenous takeover of Quito. On the other hand, the clashes fit together and there are already two deaths from the violence.

Putin threatens with ‘Sarmat’, his most modern nuclear missile. It is pointed out that in the midst of new rumors about an alleged discomfort and division in the Russian leadership due to the slow progress of the so-called ‘special military operation’ in Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin yesterday took advantage of a meeting in the Kremlin with graduates of academies in order to send a message of encouragement to its troops and announce the prompt entry into service of its most modern missile, the fearsome ‘Sarmat’. «The tests of the heavy intercontinental ballistic missile ‘Sarmat’ have been carried out successfully. It is planned that by the end of 2022 the first batch of this class of weapon will be in combat service,” Putin assured the very young officers. In his words, this atomic charge rocket, whose first test launch took place in April, “is capable of overcoming all modern anti-missile defenses, is the most powerful missile in terms of target range in the world”, in Europe and USA. On the other hand, the Russian government has warned Lithuanians that they will suffer from the blockade of Kaliningrad: as part of the EU sanctions imposed on Moscow for the war, Lithuania has restricted rail traffic through its territory in the direction of Russian enclave.

Luigi Di Maio leaves the 5 Star Movement and causes a major split. The refusal of the ‘grillinos’ to send weapons to Ukraine has been the pretext for leaving the party with which they won the last elections and taking more than 50 parliamentarians with them: the scene of the fray, this time, was the war in Ukraine and the government’s decision to continue sending weapons to the invaded country. The 5 Star Movement (M5S), however, was discreetly opposed and asked that the decision be voted on in parliament. For this reason, the one who was its leader and who today holds the position of Foreign Minister opened a public battle that ended with his definitive abandonment of the formation. An explosive movement that returns instability to the country and that, fundamentally, constitutes the prelude to the destruction of the anti-system party that he helped found and with which he won the last elections held in Italy. The new group led by Di Maio is called ‘Together for the future’ and in this new political project “there will be no place for hatred, sovereignty and populism.”

Earthquake in Afghanistan kills 280 people, authorities say. The earthquake, of magnitude 5.9, occurred about 45 kilometers southwest of the city of Khost, in the southeast of the country: the earthquake occurred this morning. Raees Hozaifa, director of information and culture in the eastern province of Paktika, said the quake was felt in several provinces and the death toll in Paktika alone was at least 280 people. “We have 280 bodies, about 150 wounded,” he said, adding that more than 100 houses were destroyed in four districts of the province. A rescue effort was underway, he said.
