Gustavo Petro is the new president of Colombia

At 5:00 p.m. m. On this June 19, the news became official: Gustavo Petro Urrego, representative of the Historical Pact, had become the new president of Colombia. The left-wing politician obtained more than 11 million votes, according to the pre-count of the National Registry.

Upon hearing the news, the now president-elect celebrated on his social networks and assured that his victory was historic and he owes it to his voters and to God.

“Today is a holiday for the people. Let him celebrate the first popular victory. May so many sufferings be cushioned in the joy that today floods the heart of the Homeland. This victory for God and for the People and their history. Today is the day of the streets and squares,” he wrote on Twitter.

For her part, Francia Márquez, Petro’s vice-presidential formula, and who will be his teammate for the next four years, thanked the electorate who voted convinced by his political project.

“Thanks to the Colombian men and women who came out today to vote massively with dignity, overcoming fear and with the hope of living tasty and in peace”

Petro and Márquez will take office on August 7.

Although there is still more than a month to go before he assumes the reins of the country, there is already speculation about who would be in his cabinet. On the list are several academics and politicians who expressed their support for him during this electoral campaign.

For example, Alejandro Gaviria is presumed to arrive at the Ministry of Health. This economist and civil engineer has directed several relevant state organizations and entities, but without a doubt, one of his greatest achievements is that between 2012 and 2018 he already held this portfolio. While he was at the head of the Ministry of Health, he promoted the regulation of drug prices, contributed to the advancement of universal coverage and the equalization of benefits between the contributory and subsidized regimes. He also achieved the approval of the Statutory Law on health.

As for the Ministry of the Interior, the most notorious for the position is Petro’s vice-presidential formula of 2018, Ángela María Robledo. She is a psychologist and has a master’s degree in Social Policy. She has been a congresswoman for several periods and it is noteworthy that in these legislatures she has promoted several projects in favor of minors, women, peace and the victims of the armed conflict in Colombia.

It is speculated that Cecilia López, a liberal economist with more than 20 years of experience as a public official, could arrive at the Ministry of Finance. Currently, she remains a member of several boards of directors of international organizations located in the economic sector.

To a lesser extent, Julián de Zubiria, economist and educator recognized for being a pedagogical researcher, for the Ministry of Education; and Moisés Wasserman, a biochemist who has already worked in several state entities, in the Ministry of Sciences. In the Ministry of the Environment, the same vice president has been proposed, or in her absence, Luis Gilberto Murillo; former vice-presidential formula of Sergio Fajardo; or Brigitte Baptiste, biologist and rector of the EAN University.

Other names that have come to light are that of the writer Mario Mendoza, for the Ministry of Culture; that of Álvaro Leyva, as High Commissioner for Peace; and that of Sandra Borda, as chancellor. It is also highlighted that the economist Juan Daniel Oviedo, current director of DANE, is appointed to continue his work in this unit, since the citizens consider that he is the best official of the Duque Government.
