The Minister of the Environment of the Dominican Republic was shot dead in his office

The Dominican Minister of the Environment, Orlando Jorge Mera, was shot dead this Monday in his office, three sources from the ministry reported.

An armed man broke into a meeting in which Jorge Mera, son of former president Salvador Jorge Blanco (1982-1986), held weekly with his deputy ministers and opened fire, according to the officials who spoke on the condition of confidentiality.

The shooter was allegedly a close friend of the victim, so he had access to the security area.

Police declined to comment on the incident. The AFP team at the scene saw a team from the elite police unit enter the ministry. Media outlets indicated that the attacker is still in the building and has hostages.

“From the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources we are dismayed by the situation presented this Monday morning, so far we have no details,” the institution reported on Twitter.

“We are concerned about the situation,” Mera’s ministry said in a brief statement.

Bartolomé Pujals, executive director of the government’s Innovation Cabinet, wrote that he regretted the murder.

“Her death of him is a tragedy,” he said. “We Dominicans have to unite to achieve a pact for peace and peaceful coexistence. No more violence.”

Jorge Mera, 55, has held his position since the beginning of the Government of President Luis Abinader, in August 2020.

A law graduate and leader of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), Jorge Mera was married to the Dominican ambassador to Brazil, Patricia Villegas, and leaves behind two children, including deputy Orlando Jorge.
