The US claimed that Russia had lost up to 30% of its armored force since the start of the attacks.

US Armed Forces Chief of Staff Mark Milley said on Wednesday that Russia had lost 20-30% of its armored force in Ukraine since the beginning of the invasion.

Speaking at a news conference in Brussels alongside Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, after meeting with allies backing kyiv, Milley agreed with official estimates that Ukraine is losing a hundred soldiers a day and said the country continues to be greatly outnumbered. measured by Russia’s firepower.

“However, the Ukrainians are using much better artillery techniques and it’s having a pretty good effect on the Russians,” he said.

Milley said that the Lugansk region is where “the most significant fighting” is now taking place, and that although “the war takes many turns”, the “numbers clearly favor the Russians in terms of artillery”, although they have “problems” of command, morale or leadership, he noted.

On the same day that President Joe Biden announced a new $1 billion shipment of weapons to Ukraine, Milley insisted that Ukraine had in some cases received more tanks and artillery than requested.

Weapons shipped to Ukraine include “97,000 anti-tank systems; there are more anti-tank systems than the total number of tanks in the world”.

Furthermore, he added that the first of 10 long-range artillery systems will be operational on the battlefield in a few weeks, after an initial batch of Ukrainian troops have been trained to use them.

“If they use the weapon correctly and it’s used correctly, they should be able to take out a significant number of targets, and that’s going to make a difference,” Milley said.

US defense chiefs insisted the West is providing the weapons Ukraine has asked for “as quickly as possible” and expressed confidence that longer-range systems could have a major impact.

Last week, US sources had confirmed that Ukraine has run out of its Russian and Soviet-made weaponry and is now entirely dependent on its allies for weapons to counter the Russian invasion.

As a country that was once part of the Soviet Union, Ukraine has built its army and military industry with Soviet and Russian equipment, small arms, tanks, howitzers and others not comparable to those of its western neighbors.

More than three months after the conflict broke out with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, that equipment has already been depleted or destroyed on the battlefield, US sources say.

Now, the kyiv forces are handling or learning to handle weapons used by the United States or European NATO allies.
