There are already cases of monkeypox in eight European countries

The World Health Organization (WHO) called an extraordinary meeting with specialists on monkeypox, where they will discuss “the main topics of conversation will be around how the virus is spreading, the unusually high prevalence in homosexual and bisexual men, as well as the vaccination situation”.

Portugal confirmed nine new cases of monkeypox in the last few hours, bringing the number of confirmed cases in the country to 23, although health authorities do not rule out an increase because they await results from other samples.
Among the analyzes carried out, the Portuguese General Directorate of Health reported that it had detected a variety of the West African virus that “is less aggressive.”

The number of confirmed cases in Portugal has skyrocketed since Wednesday, when the DGS reported the first five “monkeypox” cases.

Meanwhile, the British Minister of Health, Sajid Javid, confirmed this Friday that eleven other cases of monkeypox have been detected in the United Kingdom, bringing the total identified to date in the country to 20.

In a message on Twitter, the head of Health pointed out that he has informed his G7 colleagues about what is known about the spread of the virus in this country to date.

“Most of the cases are mild, and I can confirm that we have provided more doses of vaccines that are effective against monkeypox,” he said.

The Government has stocks of smallpox vaccines, which are effective against monkeypox, as the viruses are quite similar.
For its part, Italy has recorded three confirmed cases of monkeypox, after the first contagion was reported this Thursday in a young man from the Canary Islands, in Spain, health sources reported today.

The Infectious Diseases Surveillance Service of Lazio, the Rome region, confirmed today that the other two cases that were being studied have also tested positive and had had contact with the so-called patient zero that was confirmed this Thursday and that he had spent a few days in the Canary Islands.

The three patients are admitted to the Lazaro Spallanzani Institute in the capital, they reported in a note.

The Minister of Health of Lazio, Alessio D’Amato, explained that he has informed the Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza, of the situation.

The general director of Spallazani, Francesco Vaia, stated that the first message that must be given is “that there is no cause for alarm” and that the “situation must be kept under control”, at a press conference after communicating the two new cases. .

“The three people are in good health, only one has had a short-term fever and all of them have swollen lymph nodes and pain, as well as the appearance of a limited number of small localized skin pustules,” added Vaia.

Initial symptoms of the disease include fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, swollen lymph nodes, chills and exhaustion, the agency says.

A skin rash may also develop, often starting on the face and spreading to other parts of the body.

The first confirmed in France and Germany join Belgium

The General Directorate of Health of France confirmed this Friday a first case of the so-called monkeypox in its territory, in a 29-year-old man who had not traveled in recent months to the countries where the virus circulates.

The man was hospitalized due to suspicion of contagion, but given the absence of seriousness in his case, he was sent home, where he remains isolated, according to the authorities, who recommend that the quarantine last the three weeks that it takes approximately for the wounds that provokes.

“The Public Health teams of France and the Paris region, in contact with the doctor who treated this person, have opened an epidemiological investigation. People who have been in close contact with this patient are being identified,” the General Directorate of Health said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Institute of Microbiology of the German Armed Forces in Munich confirmed the first case of monkeypox in the country, detected on May 19 in a patient with the characteristic skin lesions of the virus, the Bundeswehr Medical Service reported.

The statement recalls that health authorities in Europe and North America have detected an increasing number of cases of monkeypox since the beginning of March, which raises fears that the disease, usually present only in some regions of Africa, is spreading.

Finally, the Belgian authorities have reported that they have detected the second case of monkeypox. It was in a laboratory in Leuven and in a man from Flemish Brabant, a region in the province of Flanders. This joins another patient who has a possible connection, since the two attended the same party.
