Venezuela registered almost 1,000 murders in the first half of the year

Venezuela recorded 950 murders in the first half of the year, of which 330 were deaths caused by police forces, according to a bulletin released Tuesday by the NGO Observatorio Venezolano de Violencia (OVV).

The document, called “Crimes Known by Society”, reports “620 intentional homicides” and “330 deaths due to police intervention”, a figure recorded between January and June 2022 through monitoring of cases reported in the media. of Caracas and in 13 of the 23 states of Venezuela.

The report highlights that, in addition to these murders, another 1,543 crimes of interpersonal violence were recorded, including sexual assaults, whose victims are mostly women, in many cases, girls and adolescents.

On gender violence, it details that almost 50% of women victims of a crime in the first semester suffered physical aggression, while 11% were sexually abused and another 11% corresponds to the total number of completed femicides.

Likewise, the OVV points out that 84% of the known victims of the murders were men, almost all of them between the ages of 20 and 29.

The non-governmental organization recorded a total of 11,081 violent deaths in 2021, of which 3,112 were homicides, 4,003 “deaths under investigation”, 2,332 due to “resistance to authority” and 1,634 are considered disappearances.

Professor Adrián González, a member of the NGO, explained to the EFE news agency that the figures for the first half of 2022 show an apparent reduction in homicides compared to the same period of the previous year, although, he remarked, there is an “underreporting” of homicides. cases due to lack of official information.

“There is a drought of media (of communication),” the researcher underlined, recalling that the OVV bulletin is based solely on crimes reported by the press.
